About the pH Value

The pH value, or degree of acidity, indicates whether water is acidic or basic. Neutral water has a pH value of 7. When acidic components predominate, the pH value is below 7. Conversely, when basic components dominate, the pH value is above 7.

Many aquatic organisms are highly sensitive to rapid or significant changes in pH value. A sudden drop or increase can lead to severe stress or even losses.

In freshwater aquariums, the optimal pH range for most fish and plants is generally between 6.5 and 7.2. Some specific biotopes, such as those inspired by Lake Malawi, have higher values that can reach up to 9.0.

In saltwater aquariums, the optimal pH value is between 8.0 and 8.5, close to the natural conditions of the oceans. It is essential to avoid any significant variation and to regularly monitor this parameter.

Usage and Measurement Principle

Measurement is performed by adding a drop of pH reagent to a water sample. After shaking, the obtained coloration is compared to the color chart to determine the corresponding pH value.

The reading should be performed from the top of the cuvette, under light similar to daylight, to obtain a reliable color match.

Measures for Unfavorable Values

In saltwater aquariums, a pH value that is too high or too low can be corrected by adjusting additives, equipment influencing the pH, or by a partial water change. The use of appropriate buffer solutions can also be considered.

In freshwater aquariums, a partial water change and regular parameter control generally allow identification and correction of the causes of pH deviations.

Durability and Storage

The reagents are usable for 6 months after opening. They should be stored in a dark and cool place to ensure the reliability of the results.

Regular pH control is essential to maintain stable and suitable conditions for the requirements of fish, plants, and corals.
