For high-precision determination of phosphate concentration
Phosphates (PO43–) are essential nutrients for all plants and indispensable for the energy metabolism of any living cell. Phosphates enter the aquarium water through food and decomposition processes. However, uncontrolled increases in phosphate levels pose a problem, especially with rapid algae growth. Furthermore, in marine aquariums, phosphates can significantly complicate the precipitation of calcium carbonate, which is used in the formation of the calcareous skeletons of hard corals, thus compromising their growth. On the other hand, in the presence of a high population of plants or corals and a low population of fish, phosphate can also become scarce, necessitating rebalancing. Some coral aquariums are subject to extremely low-nutrient conditions that may lead to a phosphate deficiency.
In natural seawater, phosphate levels are around 0.06 mg/l. Near coral reefs, however, this value can be significantly lower, with concentrations ranging between 0.01 and 0.02 mg/l. In a marine aquarium, efforts should be made to achieve corresponding values depending on the existing population. For freshwater, a value of up to 0.4 mg/l is suitable and should never exceed 1 mg/l. A concentration of 0.02 mg/l is already considered sufficient for the nutrient supply of aquatic plants. Therefore, the phosphate concentration in aquarium water should be regularly monitored.
With the Tropic Marin® Professional Phosphate Test, the phosphate concentration can be determined with very high precision in the low concentration range between 0.01 and 1 mg/l.

Instructions for use:
1. Shake the dropper bottles well before use! Assemble and prepare the comparator.
2. Rinse both glass cuvettes several times with tap water, then with aquarium water.
3. Using the dosing syringe, accurately pour 15 ml of aquarium water into each glass cuvette. Set aside one of the water samples as a reference.
4. Add 10 drops (for seawater) or 12 drops (for freshwater) of reagent A into the test cuvette, close the test cuvette with the cap, and briefly shake the sample.
5. Then add 3 drops of reagent B, close the glass cuvette again, and briefly shake the solution.
6. After 4 minutes of development time, place the test cuvette and the reference cuvette with the water sample in the comparator. Place the comparator on the color chart so that the reference cuvette is on a colored area and the test cuvette is on a white area.
7. Now compare the opposite fields. To do this, look from above into the open cuvettes. Move the comparator on the color chart until the two cuvettes show the same color.
8. Read the phosphate value under the corresponding colored area. If the colors don't match exactly, deduce an intermediate value.
9. Once the measurement process is complete, thoroughly rinse the glass cuvettes and syringe with tap water.
Application of the "Standard" solution to control the test
Regarding titration tests, the functionality is generally time-limited. For example, the durability of reagents depends, among other things, on storage conditions. If they are no longer sufficiently functional, the test will no longer result in coloration even in the case of high phosphate values. To check the reliability of the test in the case of a measurement result below 0.1 mg/l, add 3 drops of the Standard reference solution to a new sample. If a blue coloration appears during this new test, the reliability of the reagents is guaranteed.
Actions to Take
In case of too high phosphate concentration in the water, here are our recommendations:
• Use effective phosphate adsorbents such as Tropic Marin®: ELIMI-PHOS, ELIMI-PHOS Longlife, or ELIMI-PHOS RAPID;
• Monitor and, if necessary, reduce population density and food quantities or enrich food with Tropic Marin® LIPOVIT / LIPO-GARLIC;
• Remove debris, dead plants, and other impurities;
• Stimulate the growth of nutrient-consuming organisms, for example, more plants in freshwater tanks or more algae and corals in marine aquariums;
• Use Tropic Marin® PRO-CORAL ORGANIC, NP-BACTO-BALANCE, NP-BACTO-PELLETS, or other products to reduce the nutritional level in the medium term.
In case of low phosphate values, here are our recommendations (while observing nitrate content):
• In marine aquariums, use PLUS-NP as a balanced nutrient source;
• Increase food quantities;
