Macropharyngodon ornatus – Ornate Leopard Wrasse, an Ally Against Flatworms for Reef Aquariums

Macropharyngodon ornatus, also known as the ornate leopard wrasse, is a colorful and useful reef fish native to the Indian Ocean. This magnificent labrid is known for its effective role in combating flatworms, dreaded parasites in marine aquariums. Its body is adorned with complex patterns, typical of the Macropharyngodon genus, earning it the nickname "leopard."

A Discreet but Valuable Behavior

Active during the day, this leopard wrasse constantly hunts the macrofauna present on rocks and the substrate. It is an opportunistic carnivore that also consumes frozen food such as brine shrimp, mysis, or krill. Very useful for preventing flatworm infestations, it is perfectly reef safe and does not damage corals or invertebrates.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 300 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Substrate: fine sand required so it can bury itself at night or in case of stress
  • Decor: live rocks rich in hiding places and microfauna
  • Water flow: moderate

Behavior and Compatibility

Peaceful and discreet, the Macropharyngodon ornatus is suitable for most community reef aquariums. It can coexist with other wrasses of the same genus if the volume is sufficient, but it is preferable to introduce it alone or as a pair in a spacious tank. It sleeps buried in the sand and may disappear for several days if stressed after introduction.

Diet

  • Frozen brine shrimp and mysis
  • Live micro-crustaceans (copepods, amphipods, worms)
  • Carnivorous pellets and flakes (once well acclimated)

It is recommended to maintain a population rich in microfauna to support its natural diet.

Why Choose Macropharyngodon ornatus?

  • Natural predator of flatworms
  • Reef safe with all corals and invertebrates
  • Discreet, useful, and aesthetically fascinating fish
  • Calm diurnal behavior, perfect for community reefs
  • Adds movement and life to the tank

Macropharyngodon ornatus is an elegant and functional wrasse, a true ally for aquarists seeking a useful, colorful fish that is respectful of the reef environment.
