Anti-silicates

Anti-Silicates

The Anti-Silicates category includes media and protocols designed to eliminate dissolved silicates (SiO₄), responsible for diatom blooms and vertical deposits on surfaces.

Operating Principles

  • Deionizing Resins (DI): MB20 resins or combined R/O+DI to lower conductivity and remove >95% of silicates in a single step.
  • Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) Adsorbers: granular ferric oxide capturing silicates through chemical adsorption, often used for phosphate and silicate.
  • Reverse Osmosis Filters: R/O unit with a 75–100 GPD membrane to drastically reduce silicate content upstream of water preparation.

Advantages

  • Rapid Reduction: significant decrease in silicates within 24–48 hours.
  • Prevention of Diatoms: keeps glass and decorations clean, better light penetration.
  • Versatility: GFO combines phosphate and silicate removal.
  • Simplicity: easy insertion into a reactor or dedicated cartridge, simple maintenance.

Usage Recommendations

  • Install 50–100 g of GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide) per 100 L of volume in a laminar flow reactor.
  • Circulate water at a moderate flow rate (5–10 times the tank volume per hour) to optimize contact with the media.
  • Replace or regenerate the GFO every 4–6 weeks depending on silicate load and turbidity.
  • Place a DI cartridge (MB20) at the output of reverse osmosis to maintain conductivity < 10 µS/cm and ensure continuous silicate removal.
  • Test silicate content (AquaHomeTest SiO₄ or ICP) every 2–3 weeks to monitor effectiveness and adjust media change frequency.
