Deionizing resins for RO systems are used as the final stage to remove residual ions still present after the membrane (silicates, nitrates, metals, phosphates). Their main advantage is producing water close to 0 TDS, which is essential to avoid introducing pollutants into a demanding reef aquarium.

Historically, deionization comes from industrial and laboratory applications, where ultra-pure water has been required since the mid-20th century.
