Apogon margaritophorus – Red-Spotted Cardinalfish

The Apogon margaritophorus is a small reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific region, easily recognizable by its translucent beige body adorned with bright red spots scattered across its sides. This coloration gives it a unique elegance and a shimmering effect that is highly appreciated in well-lit reef aquariums.

A Nocturnal and Peaceful Fish

Rather discreet by nature, this cardinalfish is mainly active in the early evening and at night. It prefers calm and shaded areas of the aquarium, often taking refuge in crevices or under rocky overhangs during the day. Its peacefulness makes it an excellent candidate for community tanks, even in the presence of small invertebrates and corals.

Care Conditions

  • Recommended minimum volume: 100 liters
  • Temperature: between 24°C and 28°C
  • pH: between 8.0 and 8.4
  • Decor: live rock, caves, shaded hiding spots
  • Water flow: moderate to low

Behavior and Compatibility

The Apogon margaritophorus is a gregarious fish. It is therefore recommended to keep it in a small group (from 3 to 5 individuals) to observe interesting social behaviors. It coexists without issues with most calm fish and invertebrates. However, be cautious with overly active or territorial species that might stress it.

Diet

  • Frozen or live brine shrimp and mysis
  • Plankton and micro-prey
  • Marine pellets suitable for carnivorous fish

Thanks to its docile temperament, its translucent appearance adorned with red spots, and its ease of acclimatization, Apogon margaritophorus integrates harmoniously into a reef aquarium. It is an ideal fish for aquarists looking to add life and finesse to their underwater decor.
