Pomacentrus coelestis: the celestial damselfish, lively and bright for a well-structured reef tank

The Pomacentrus coelestis, also known as the celestial damselfish, is a small bright reef fish with an intense electric blue body and a vivid yellow posterior. This combination of bright colors resembles a tropical sky at sunset, hence its common name. Originating from the reefs of the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, this species is highly appreciated in marine aquariums for its resilience, beauty, and liveliness.

The Pomacentrus coelestis measures between 5 and 7 cm when fully grown. Its shape is typically oval and laterally compressed. Highly active, it primarily occupies the middle and upper zones of the tank, regularly patrolling its small territory or interacting with other reef inhabitants.

A lively and territorial behavior

The celestial damselfish is known for its energetic and sometimes territorial temperament. It can be dominant towards calmer or smaller fish if the environment is poorly structured. It is therefore recommended to:

  • Keep it alone or as a pair in a 150 to 200-liter tank,
  • Or form a small group of 5 or more individuals in a tank larger than 250 liters to dilute aggression.

A natural hierarchy then establishes itself, reducing conflicts. The Pomacentrus coelestis coexists well with lively and robust species, as long as the decor allows each fish to isolate itself if necessary.

A rocky and compartmentalized decor

The Pomacentrus coelestis requires a decor rich in live rocks, with hiding spots, overhangs, and crevices. This allows it to clearly define its territory and shelter from tensions. A moderate to strong water flow and good lighting will highlight its natural brilliance.

In a community tank, the presence of other fish of equivalent size and assertive behavior prevents excessive dominance situations. Very calm or shy species should be avoided.

A balanced omnivorous diet

The Pomacentrus coelestis is a non-demanding omnivore, feeding on plankton, algae, and small invertebrates. In an aquarium, it readily accepts:

  • Marine pellets and flakes suited for omnivorous fish,
  • Frozen or freeze-dried prey like artemia, mysis, or krill,
  • Vegetable supplements rich in spirulina to support its coloration and digestion.

A regular and varied intake, with two to three meals daily, helps maintain its vitality and limit aggressive behaviors due to food competition.

A dazzling fish for well-thought-out reef aquariums

Thanks to its spectacular appearance, natural resilience, and ease of care, the Pomacentrus coelestis is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. It integrates perfectly into a decorated community reef, provided its needs for space and structure are respected.

For those looking for a colorful, robust, and active damselfish, the celestial damselfish is a reliable choice that brightens any tank with its deep blue and golden reflections.
