Zanclus cornutus – Moorish Idol for Reef Aquarium

The Zanclus cornutus, better known as the Moorish Idol, is one of the most iconic reef fish. Its flat body of iridescent white with yellow highlights is crossed by two large vertical black stripes, all topped with an extremely elongated dorsal fin reminiscent of a traditional coachman's whip.

This majestic fish originates from the Indo-Pacific Ocean, where it moves in schools or small groups in shallow reef areas. The Zanclus cornutus is a symbol of aquatic grace, appreciated for its curious behavior and unique aesthetics.

Behavior and Compatibility

The Zanclus cornutus can be kept in groups of 3 to 5 individuals as long as they are introduced simultaneously into a very large aquarium. Each individual tends to defend its own territory, which is why it is essential to provide many hiding spots to avoid stress and conflicts.

This fish is compatible with most peaceful reef species. However, it is not recommended to keep it with very territorial or aggressive species.

Care Conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 600 to 800 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decoration: lots of live rocks, free swimming areas, and hiding spots
  • Water movement: moderate to strong

Feeding

The Zanclus cornutus is an omnivore with a tendency towards microphagy. In captivity, it accepts:

  • Brine shrimp, mysis, krill
  • Finely chopped mussel or shrimp meat
  • Marine pellets and flakes suitable for reef fish
  • Vegetable supplements (nori seaweed, blanched spinach)

A varied diet promotes acclimatization and longevity for this sensitive fish.

Why Choose Zanclus cornutus?

  • Unique silhouette and contrasting coloration
  • Graceful and curious behavior
  • Compatible with many reef species
  • Adds significant aesthetic value to the aquarium
  • Possible in groups if the volume is suitable

The Zanclus cornutus is an iconic reef fish, both spectacular and delicate. Its introduction into a reef aquarium must be well-prepared, but the visual result is worth it. With proper acclimatization, this fish becomes a central, lively, and majestic resident in any marine decor.
