Description

The main function of a biological filter material is to provide an ideal surface for the establishment of bacterial cultures. These purifying bacteria feed on dirt particles and transform harmful substances, thus contributing to the biological balance of the aquarium.

After the first stage of mechanical filtration, performed for example with EHEIM MECH or MECHpro, biological filtration becomes essential. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable parameters over the long term.

Features

EHEIM SUBSTRAT PRO is a highly porous sintered quartz biological filter medium. Its surface structure offers exceptional colonization conditions for cleaning bacteria.

The active surface reaches approximately 450 m² per liter, allowing for very high biological efficiency even in reduced filtration volumes.

This medium can be used alone or in multiple layers, is washable and reusable. It is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.

Usage Advice

It is recommended never to clean or replace all of the biological filter material at once. Excessive cleaning would destroy the bacterial cultures and delay the biological stabilization of the filter.

Partial and gradual cleaning is preferable, especially in external filter baskets or internal filter modules, in order to preserve bacterial activity.
