Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus: the Goblin Hawkfish, Discreet and Formidable Observer

The Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus, also known as the Goblin Hawkfish or Red-spotted Hawkfish, is a carnivorous reef fish with character, valued for its stocky silhouette and its observational behavior typical of the Cirrhitidae family. This fish naturally lives between 1 and 40 meters deep in the reefs of the Red Sea and the Pacific, where it perches on rocks or corals to watch for prey.

The body of the Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus is white to cream, covered with small brown to red spots evenly distributed up to its dorsal fin, which has clearly visible erectile rays. It measures about 10 cm when fully grown and adopts a characteristic posture, perched on its pelvic fins, with its head slightly raised.

A Solitary and Territorial Behavior

The Goblin Hawkfish is a solitary, territorial, and sometimes aggressive fish towards its peers, especially other hawkfish. It is therefore preferable to keep it alone per species in the same tank to avoid any direct confrontation.

On the other hand, it coexists well with other non-territorial fish, especially if they are of equal or larger size. This specimen spends most of its time perched on a high point of the decor, observing the surroundings and jumping from perch to perch with precision. It is advisable not to keep it with very small invertebrates, such as ornamental shrimp, which it might hunt.

A Stable and Well-Structured Aquarium from 400 Liters

The Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus requires a minimum volume of 400 liters to ensure stable behavior and good development. The tank should contain many live rocks, overhangs, and hiding places, as this fish likes to perch, observe, and camouflage itself.

The flow should be moderate to strong, and oxygenation constant. The decor must be compartmentalized to allow each species to find a well-defined territory, thus limiting stress or aggression.

A Selective Carnivore with a Sharp Eye

The Red-spotted Hawkfish is a specialized carnivore in ambush hunting. In captivity, it feeds easily on:

  • Krill, artemia, mysis, live or thawed,
  • Small pieces of mussels, shrimp, or fish, distributed with tweezers,
  • Carnivorous pellets if well accustomed.

Warning: the Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus may attack live shrimp, even of medium size. It is therefore not recommended to associate it with mobile invertebrates in a mixed tank.

An Ideal Observation Fish for Mature Reefs

The Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus is an excellent choice for experienced aquarists looking for an intelligent bottom-dwelling fish that is not very mobile but very expressive. Its speckled coat, attentive eye, and precise movements give it a unique presence in the tank.

Provided it is given a large volume, rocky decor, and suitable carnivorous diet, the Goblin Hawkfish will become a fascinating resident, calm but always on the lookout, in a balanced reef aquarium.
