The Paracirrhites forsteri, also known as Forster's Hawkfish, is a large-sized Cirrhitidae, robust and typically sedentary. Native to the Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific, this reef fish lives perched on hard corals or live rocks, patiently observing every movement. It is particularly popular for its robustness, calm behavior, and variable colorful appearance.
The Paracirrhites forsteri can reach up to 22 cm in adulthood, making it one of the largest hawkfishes available in aquariums. Its appearance can vary from yellow to brown, sometimes white, with dark spots on the sides and a characteristic spiny dorsal fin. Some specimens display a highly appreciated tricolor pattern.
The Forster's Hawkfish is a calm, solitary, and very territorial fish. It chooses an elevated observation spot in the decor and spends most of its time there. It does not tolerate the presence of conspecifics or similar hawkfishes but can coexist with robust and non-aggressive fish, provided there is enough space.
This fish is incompatible with small mobile invertebrates like Lysmata shrimps, which it considers prey. It is thus to be avoided in reef aquariums rich in mobile microfauna. It is not very shy around humans and can be hand-fed once acclimated.
Due to its significant adult size and static behavior, the Paracirrhites forsteri requires an aquarium of at least 400 liters. The decor should be rich in live rocks, overhangs, non-stinging corals, and especially, elevated areas to allow it to perch and observe.
This fish is not a great swimmer. It prefers fixed areas, well-exposed to light and moderate currents. Good oxygenation of the water is essential for its well-being. Once its territory is established, it rarely leaves it, except to feed or escape danger.
The Forster's Hawkfish is a carnivorous predator that feeds by ambush. In an aquarium, it readily accepts:
It is recommended to feed it 1 to 2 times a day. It is best to avoid food competition with very active or aggressive fish that might disrupt its feeding rhythm.
The Paracirrhites forsteri is a wise choice for large aquariums, well-decorated and populated with compatible species. Its static behavior, expressive gaze, and sometimes spectacular appearance make it a charismatic inhabitant, both calm and powerful.
Easy to acclimate, hardy, and undemanding once well-established, the Forster's Hawkfish stands out as a reliable choice for experienced aquarists seeking an original, observant, and resilient specimen.
