Synchiropus splendidus, commonly known as the mandarin fish or cashmere fish, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and colorful marine fish. Native to the coral reefs of Southeast Asia and Oceania, it catches everyone's eye with its electric blue, green, and orange patterns and unique psychedelic shapes all over its body. This hypnotic fish measures between 6 and 8 cm when fully grown.
The mandarin dragonet usually lives alone or in pairs, close to the substrate, searching for microfauna that it feeds on throughout the day. Territorial, it remains peaceful with other species, but interactions between conspecifics should be avoided unless they are a formed pair. It spends its time inspecting live rocks and sand in search of copepods, isopods, or tiny worms.
The Synchiropus splendidus requires a well-established aquarium with at least 6 months of maturation to ensure an abundant microfauna presence. Although it can be fed with frozen artemia or mysis, it will always prefer live food if available. Therefore, it is crucial to have a tank rich in biodiversity, with décor conducive to observation and hunting.
This peaceful fish is ideal in a reef community aquarium. It coexists easily with invertebrates and calm fish. Its discreet behavior, slow movements, and constant activity make it as useful as it is pleasant to observe. It can help consume small parasites present in the tank and contributes to the overall balance of the ecosystem.
The Synchiropus splendidus is a true living jewel for any well-established reef aquarium. Its beauty, curious behavior, and compatibility with most inhabitants make it a must-have for passionate aquarists committed to a balanced ecosystem.
