Synchiropus sycorax – Flamboyant Ruby Mandarin for Reef Aquarium
Synchiropus sycorax, nicknamed Ruby Mandarin, is an exceptional fish originating from the Pacific Ocean. It is distinguished by its bright red body speckled with white spots, and its fins with yellow reflections adorned with fine black stripes. This aquatic jewel typically thrives at shallow depths, between 3 and 30 meters, on sandy bottoms rich in coral debris.
A territorial yet calm behavior
In the wild, the Synchiropus sycorax lives in a small hierarchical group centered around a dominant male. Territorial, it is nevertheless peaceful with other species as long as it has a well-structured space. It spends most of its time sifting through the sand and rocks in search of microfauna to feed on, moving slowly with hypnotic grace.

A fish demanding on microfauna
Like other Synchiropus, this fish primarily feeds on live microfauna: copepods, microscopic worms, small crustaceans. It is therefore essential to maintain a mature aquarium (at least 6 months) to ensure its good acclimation. Even if it can accept frozen foods like brine shrimp or mysis, it will always prefer live prey if available.
Compatibility and cohabitation
The Ruby Mandarin is perfectly compatible with invertebrates and corals. It is recommended not to cohabit it with other fish of the Synchiropus genus unless it is a formed pair or if the tank volume is significant. Its calm nature makes it ideal in a community reef aquarium.
