Salmacis virgulata – Purple-Spined Camouflage Sea Urchin
Salmacis virgulata is a sea urchin with a beige to whitish hemispherical body, covered with short purple spines. Recognizable by its slightly flattened shape, it can be easily distinguished from its close cousin, Salmacis bicolor. This elegant specimen is known for its ability to naturally camouflage itself by attaching plant debris or pieces of coral around its body.
A Discreet and Effective Camouflage Sea Urchin
Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean region, Salmacis virgulata frequents shallow rocky areas rich in microalgae. In aquariums, it continues this natural behavior by accumulating fragments of algae or other decorative elements on its shell to protect itself from light or predators.
Natural Algae Regulator
An algae-eater par excellence, Salmacis virgulata helps to limit algae proliferation on live rocks and substrates. Although it may occasionally ingest organic particles, its diet primarily depends on the algae present in the reef aquarium. It is a valuable asset for maintaining a natural balance in the tank.
