After sodium chloride, magnesium is the most abundant element in natural seawater. Its target concentration is about 1350 mg/L. In reef aquariums, deficits may occur and require correction to preserve the chemical stability of the system.
To correctly increase the magnesium level, it is necessary to combine Preis magnesium chloride hexahydrate and Preis magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. This combination maintains a balanced ratio between chloride and sulfate ions.
The required ratio to obtain 1 g of magnesium is as follows:
7.58 g of magnesium chloride hexahydrate
0.95 g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate
The salts must be precisely weighed using a high-resolution scale, dissolved in osmosis water, and then gradually added to the aquarium over several days.
Avoid too rapid an increase in magnesium. It is recommended to regularly check the concentration using an appropriate test.
Example of a 5% solution:
In 700 ml of water, dissolve:
380 g of magnesium chloride
48 g of magnesium sulfate
Then fill up with water to obtain 1000 ml.
This solution can be gradually added over several days according to the tank's needs.
