Role of Calcium in Reef Aquariums

Calcium and carbonates are essential for the calcification and growth of corals. A calcium deficiency leads to halted growth, followed by a rapid decline in coral health.

Reef Advantage Calcium also contains magnesium and strontium in a ratio proportional to typical consumption rates, being 100:5:0.1 (Ca:Mg:Sr), allowing these elements to be maintained without separate supplementation.

Beginner Dosage

Use 5 g per 150 L twice a week.

Dissolve in at least 250 ml of fresh water before adding.

Check calcium every two weeks and adjust if necessary.

Advanced Dosage

Test calcium and gradually adjust to a target value between 380 and 420 mg/L.

Each 5 g dose for 150 L increases calcium by about 12 mg/L.

Do not exceed 10 g per 150 L per day.

Expert Dosage

After determining the actual calcium consumption, a continuous dosing system can be implemented.

Calculation formula: m = (v × c) / 400, where v is the tank volume in liters and c is the desired increase in mg/L.

Recommendations and Precautions

Maintain calcium between 380 and 420 mg/L with an alkalinity between 3 and 6 meq/L (8 to 17 dKH).

Make significant adjustments gradually to avoid shocks.

Do not mix directly with carbonate supplements.

Excess calcium can increase alkalinity consumption.
