Magnesium is an essential element of seawater and plays a central role in the chemical stability of reef aquariums. It contributes to the overall ionic balance and indirectly helps maintain calcium and alkalinity.

Reef Advantage Magnesium is a concentrated and ionically balanced blend of magnesium salts, chloride, and sulfate. Its formulation effectively corrects magnesium deficiencies with minimal impact on natural ionic ratios. This product contains no ammonia, a common contaminant in liquid magnesium supplements.

Severely depleted magnesium levels, especially below 800 mg/L, can lead to a drop in pH and make it difficult to stabilize tank parameters. Common causes include the use of kalkwasser, overdosing carbonated additives, or insufficient magnesium content in the salt used.

Parameter Goals

The recommended magnesium level in a reef aquarium is between 1,200 and 1,350 mg/L.

Usage Instructions

Beginner Level

Use 5 g of product for 80 L of water, twice per week.

Dissolve the dose in at least 250 ml of freshwater before adding to the aquarium.

For precise dosing, the use of a digital spoon scale is recommended.

Advanced Level

Measure the magnesium level, then follow the addition scheme above until reaching a concentration between 1,200 and 1,350 mg/L.

Each 5 g dose for 80 L increases magnesium by approximately 5 mg/L.

The quantity or frequency can be adjusted as needed, not exceeding 25 g for 80 L per day.

Subsequently, use as needed to maintain the magnesium level.

Expert Level

After determining the magnesium consumption rate, a continuous drip system can be set up.

The amount to add to the top-off water can be calculated using the following formula: g = v × m / 80, where g is the grams to add, v is the tank volume in liters, and m is the desired increase in magnesium in mg/L.

Example: To increase magnesium by 10 mg/L in a 200 L aquarium, add 25 g to the top-off water.

Important Considerations

Regularly test magnesium using an appropriate test to ensure parameter stability.

Significant adjustments should be made gradually to avoid any abrupt changes.

Excess magnesium can enhance the loss of carbonate alkalinity.

Do not mix directly with a carbonate supplement.

It is recommended to add magnesium and carbonate supplements every other day or at least 30 minutes apart.

Slight clumping of the product may occur without impacting its effectiveness; clumps disintegrate easily.
