Tropic Marin Nitrite Nitrate Test Professional for aquarium

The Tropic Marin Nitrite Nitrate Professional Test allows for accurate measurement of nitrite and nitrate concentrations in the aquarium. These two parameters are essential for monitoring the nitrogen cycle, biological stability, and preventing imbalances affecting fish, invertebrates, and corals.

Measurement ranges and accuracy

Parameter Value
Nitrite measurement range 0 to 1.0 mg/L
Nitrate measurement range 0 to 20 mg/L
Nitrite precision 0.002 mg/L
Nitrate precision 0.05 mg/L

About nitrite and nitrate

Nitrates come from the nitrification of ammonium. During the initial stages of this bacterial process, nitrite is formed. This compound is extremely harmful to freshwater animals. When nitrification is functioning properly, nitrite is then converted into nitrate, which is significantly less toxic.

Nitrite concentrations above 0.05 mg/L are mainly observed in aquariums during the cycling phase or those equipped with nitrate filters. Regular monitoring is essential to prevent any risk to the organisms.

Nitrate directly influences the quality of aquarium water. In marine aquariums, high concentrations disrupt the growth of sensitive corals. In all aquariums, excessive levels promote algae proliferation. Conversely, some reef aquariums operating under very low nutrient conditions may experience a lack of nitrate.

In freshwater aquariums, levels up to 50 mg/L are generally tolerated. In marine aquariums, the concentration should not exceed 20 mg/L. For breeding of hard corals, Values below 10 mg/L are sought, with the lower thresholds depending on the general conditions of the aquarium.

Usage and measurement principle

The measurement is based on a colorimetric analysis. The concentration of nitrite must always be measured before that of nitrate, as a high nitrite content can influence the nitrate reading and require a correction.

In case of nitrate concentration exceeding 20 mg/L, diluting the sample allows for extending the measurement range. The obtained result should then be multiplied by the corresponding dilution factor.

The Standard reference solution allows for verifying the reliability of the test when the measured values are very low, thus ensuring the proper functioning of the reagents.

Durability and storage

The reagents can be used for up to 6 months after opening. They should be stored in a dark and cool place to preserve the accuracy of the results.

Regular monitoring of nitrite and nitrate is essential to maintain a stable biological balance and suitable water quality for freshwater and reef aquariums.
