Caulerpa lentillifera – Ornamental and Edible Algae Nicknamed Green Caviar
Caulerpa lentillifera, also known as green caviar, is a highly prized green algae in reef aquariums and Asian cuisine. It is distinguished by its thallus composed of small green spheres, similar to miniature clusters, giving it an appearance as original as it is elegant.
A Nickname Inspired by Its Shape and Flavor
Its name green caviar comes from both its spherical shape reminiscent of fish eggs and its culinary use. It is consumed in several Asian countries, notably in Japan, for its crunchy texture and iodine taste. In aquariums, it becomes a decorative algae of choice while contributing to the balance of the tank.
Specific Needs for Water Flow and Light
Caulerpa lentillifera requires a good water circulation and conditions close to its natural environment to thrive. It appreciates:
- A flow imitating the wave-like movements
- An alternation between immersion and emersion, simulating tides
- Moderate to strong light exposure
- Attachment to live rock or natural decor
In these conditions, it grows densely and forms a true plant carpet with shiny reflections.
Usefulness in Reef Aquariums
- Absorbs excess nutrients (nitrates and phosphates)
- Promotes the biological balance of the tank
- Can serve as a natural food source for some herbivores
- Original and highly decorative aesthetic
It adapts well in a main tank or in a technical refuge, provided there is sufficient lighting and regular current.
Why Choose Caulerpa lentillifera?
- Unique appearance in the form of small green pearls
- Decorative use and culinary potential
- Excellent natural nutrient reduction tool
- Suitable for a lively and well-circulated reef
- Adds an exotic and plant-like touch to the decor
Caulerpa lentillifera is an elegant, useful, and atypical choice for aquarists concerned with the aesthetics and biological balance of their tank. It will enhance a reef decor while playing an active ecological role.
