The Malacoctenus triangulatus, also known as the reef blenny, is a small marine fish with a lively and curious behavior. Typically measuring between 4 and 6 cm, this fish is distinguished by its marbled reddish-brown and cream colors, allowing it to blend perfectly into the rocky environment.
Native to the reefs of the Western Atlantic, this benthic blennioid loves exploring rocky areas, slipping between live rocks, and settling on substrates to observe its surroundings. Its territorial behavior is limited to small areas that it chooses as observation posts.
The Malacoctenus triangulatus is well-suited for nano reef aquariums starting at 60 liters, provided it is offered a natural decor composed of live rocks and numerous hiding spots. It is peaceful with other species, although it may defend its small territory against overly intrusive conspecifics.
Its small size and calm temperament make it an ideal fish for beginners, while adding a touch of activity to the lower part of the decor.
This small carnivore primarily feeds on small benthic invertebrates and microfauna which it hunts among the rocks. In an aquarium, it readily accepts:
Regular feeding once or twice a day helps keep this fish active and healthy.
Very expressive, the Malacoctenus triangulatus uses its pectoral fins to remain stationary and observe its surroundings, occasionally deploying its dorsal crest during territorial interactions. Its ability to blend into the environment makes it a discreet but fascinating fish to observe in every nook and cranny of the tank.
