Chelmon rostratus, also known as the copperband butterflyfish or long-beaked bannerfish, is an iconic species of coral reefs. This elegant fish has a silvery body adorned with five vertical orange-copper bands, along with a long snout that allows it to reach the most inaccessible cavities to capture its prey. A visible black eyespot near its dorsal fin completes its refined appearance.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, Chelmon rostratus measures between 15 and 20 cm in adulthood. It evolves alone or in pairs and can be territorial with its peers. However, it tolerates other species very well. It is known for being an aiptasia eater, making it valuable for fish-only aquariums or well-researched reef tanks.
Chelmon rostratus is a difficult fish to feed. Its success in an aquarium depends on its dietary acclimatization. At our facility, we only sell specimens already fed with fresh oysters and garlic-enriched brine shrimp, a particularly effective attractant for this species. However, a change of scenery or tank can disrupt its feeding behavior. It is rare for it to accept pellets or flakes before several weeks to several months.
This fish is therefore suited for experienced aquarists, capable of ensuring stable parameters and a calm environment with access to a varied and quality diet.
Chelmon rostratus is a fish as beautiful as it is delicate. If entrusted to a passionate and meticulous aquarist, it will add a touch of grace and utility, naturally regulating certain invasive species like aiptasia.
