Petrolisthes violaceus – Violet Reef Filter Crab
Petrolisthes violaceus, also known as the violet filter crab, is a small, peaceful crab native to the Pacific Ocean. Its body is an intense violet hue, sometimes bluish, making it very attractive in a reef aquarium. This crab lives hidden under live rocks or between stones and mainly comes out at night or during feeding.
A Peaceful and Useful Behavior
Unlike other crabs, the Petrolisthes violaceus is neither aggressive nor destructive. It is completely reef safe and can be kept with all types of corals, peaceful fish, and invertebrates. It does not have powerful claws capable of damaging its companions or the elements of the decor.
Feeding by Natural Filtration
This crab mainly feeds on suspended particles: phytoplankton, microfauna, fine food for corals or crustaceans. It uses its modified pairs of legs like small fans to filter the water and capture its food.
Maintenance Conditions
Minimum recommended volume: 50 liters
Temperature: between 24°C and 27°C
Decor: live rocks with hiding places
Water flow: moderate to strong to promote filtration
