The Neoglyphidodon bonang, also known as the bonang damselfish or golden damselfish with black tail, is an active and colorful reef fish belonging to the Pomacentridae family. It is distinguished by a bright yellow coloration at the front of the body, which gradually blends into a distinct black tail. This striking gradient makes it a visually attractive fish, especially in well-lit tanks.
As a juvenile, the Neoglyphidodon bonang is even more vibrant, with a very bright golden color. As it grows, the hues may slightly fade, but the contrast remains remarkable. It can reach up to 14 cm as an adult, classifying it among the larger damselfishes, requiring a volume of at least 200 liters.
The bonang damselfish has an assertive temperament in adulthood. It often becomes territorial, even aggressive towards its peers or smaller fish. It is therefore essential to plan a well-structured decor arrangement with many hiding places and well-defined zones.
It is not recommended to keep multiple Neoglyphidodon bonang individuals in a small volume. Cohabitation is possible with robust fish of similar or larger size, which are not dominated. However, calm and timid fish may become stressed by its presence.
An aquarium of at least 200 liters with abundant live rocks, crevices, and caves helps channel the sometimes aggressive behavior of this species. It is important to create distinct retreat zones for each fish to avoid prolonged confrontations.
Moderate to strong water movement and good oxygenation contribute to its well-being, as well as impeccable and stable water quality. This fish does not tolerate sudden changes in parameters.
The Neoglyphidodon bonang is an opportunistic omnivore. It readily accepts a varied and balanced diet:
Daily feeding, spread over several meals, helps to reduce territorial tensions and keep the fish healthy.
The Neoglyphidodon bonang is a magnificent, robust, and dynamic fish, but it requires special attention when it comes to cohabitation. It is perfectly suited for experienced aquarists looking for a vivid and colorful fish for a well-structured reef tank.
Its bright yellow body, contrasting black tail, and energetic presence make it a choice resident for those who appreciate dynamic reef tanks, provided it is given space, stability, and suitable tank mates.
