Amblyeleotris guttata, also known as the decorated goby, is a peaceful bottom-dwelling reef fish with a light body adorned with small orange spots. Its slightly blunt head and discreet behavior make it highly appreciated in small to medium-sized reef aquariums. It forms a fascinating symbiosis with the shrimp Alpheus randalli, living in a shared burrow.
This goby lives near the substrate, often remaining still at the entrance of its burrow. It can be beneficial in the natural regulation of microalgae, with some individuals displaying partially herbivorous behavior. It also contributes to soil aeration thanks to its digging movements with the partner shrimp.
In an aquarium, Amblyeleotris guttata can live alone or in partnership with a pistol shrimp (Alpheus randalli), with which it shares a burrow dug in the sand. The goby acts as a sentinel, watching the surroundings while the shrimp digs and maintains the shelter. This duo is both aesthetic and useful.
It feeds at the bottom or near the burrow, often slowly. A localized distribution helps prevent other fish from monopolizing the food.
Amblyeleotris guttata is an elegant and useful bottom-dwelling goby, perfect for reef aquarium enthusiasts wishing to observe marine symbiosis firsthand. Its discreet lifestyle, collaboration with the pistol shrimp, and contribution to tank balance make it a valuable and aesthetic ally.
