Chemical test kits have limited accuracy and resolution because they rely on distinguishing color differences perceived by the human eye. Professional-grade instrumentation incorporates a light source composed of a LED or a tungsten lamp with a filter and a light detector to accurately determine the absorbance and concentration of ions.

Recommendation

The nitrification process involves the biological oxidation of ammonia (ammonium ions) into nitrites, followed by the oxidation of nitrites into nitrates. The first step of this two-step process is carried out in an aquarium by nitrifying bacteria.

During this rapid process, ammonium levels drop as nitrite levels rise. Since nitrites are as harmful as ammonia, nitrite levels must be kept very low. A good biological filter should be able to maintain low nitrite levels.

Moreover, if tap water is to be used for an aquarium, it is recommended to check the levels of phosphates, silicates, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH, and alkalinity.
