The Profi Test Magnesium Salifert allows precise monitoring of magnesium concentration in a saltwater aquarium. Magnesium plays a key role in the stability of calcium and alkalinity, and contributes to the overall balance of the reef aquarium.
This test uses two solutions and allows for approximately 50 tests. Salifert tests are known for their reliability and ease of use.
Caution. Keep out of reach of children. Do not ingest.
Calcium does not interfere with the test as long as its concentration is between 300 and 500 ppm, which corresponds to the most commonly encountered values in reef aquariums.
There will be air present just below the piston of the 2 ml and 1 ml filled syringes. This air corresponds to the space between the plastic tip and the piston. Do not attempt to remove it.
1. Pour 2 ml of the water to be tested into the test vial using the syringe.
2. Add 5 drops of the Mg-1 reagent, then gently stir for 5 seconds.
3. Attach the plastic tip to the 1 ml syringe and fill it with the Mg-2 reagent until the bottom of the black piston reaches the 1.00 ml mark. Keep the tip submerged in the reagent to avoid air intake. An air layer between the piston and the liquid is normal and does not affect the result.
4. Gradually add the Mg-2 reagent into the test vial until the color changes to gray or blue, regardless of the initial color. Stir for one to two seconds after each drop.
5. Hold the syringe vertically, tip up, and read the position of the top of the black piston. Each graduation corresponds to 0.01 ml. The magnesium concentration is determined using the provided chart.
Natural seawater has a magnesium concentration of about 1280 ppm. This value varies based on salinity.
