Seawater Magnesium Checker HI783 Hanna Instruments
The HI783 is a digital mini-photometer developed by Hanna Instruments for the reliable and precise measurement of magnesium in seawater. It is intended for reef aquariums and marine biology applications that require rigorous monitoring of this parameter.
Why measure magnesium in marine aquariums
In seawater, magnesium influences the solubility of carbonates and calcium carbonate. It thus plays an indirect but essential role in the chemical stability of the tank and the development of corals.
The natural concentration of magnesium in seawater is about 1300 mg/L. In a reef aquarium, a value between 1300 and 1350 mg/L is considered optimal. It is recommended to avoid exceeding these values to prevent precipitation phenomena and not to go below 1200 mg/L.
Measurement principle
The Checker HI783 uses a colorimetric method. After adding the reagents, the sample develops a coloration proportional to the magnesium concentration. The intensity of this coloration is analyzed by the photometer to provide a precise numerical value without visual interpretation.
