Flourish Iron 250ml

Flourish Iron 100 ml Seachem is a highly concentrated iron supplement intended for planted freshwater aquariums.

It provides iron in the form of ferrous gluconate, a form directly assimilable by aquatic plants, ideal for efficient foliar absorption.

Role of Iron in a Planted Aquarium

Iron is an immobile element in plants, meaning it cannot be moved from older leaves to new shoots.

In case of deficiency, symptoms therefore appear first on young leaves, with characteristic chlorosis, resulting in progressive yellowing.

Iron is essential for chlorophyll production and the harmonious growth of aquatic plants.

Ferrous Iron vs Ferric Iron

Iron exists in two main forms: ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and ferric iron (Fe³⁺).

Ferrous iron is the form preferred by plants and remains soluble at all common pH levels in planted aquariums.

Conversely, ferric iron becomes quickly insoluble above a pH of 5.5, precipitates, and becomes unavailable for foliar absorption.

Specific Seachem Formulation

Flourish Iron contains 10,000 mg/L of iron in the form of ferrous gluconate.

Unlike chelated forms like iron-EDTA, this formulation does not require significant metabolic effort from plants to be assimilated.

The iron-gluconate bond is weaker than that of iron-EDTA, making the iron more rapidly available to plants.

Gluconate also provides an additional carbon source, beneficial to plant metabolism.
