Lytechinus variegatus – Herbivorous Sea Urchin with Short Spines
The Lytechinus variegatus is a reef sea urchin native to the Western Atlantic, highly valued in marine aquariums for its ability to naturally control unwanted algae. Found in coral reefs and sandy or gravelly areas, it actively contributes to the balance of your reef aquarium.
An Ideal Sea Urchin Species for Natural Maintenance
This specimen is distinguished by its thick and relatively short spines, varying from white to purple, and pale green depending on the individual. With an adult size ranging from 10 to 15 cm, the Lytechinus variegatus remains discreet while being effective. It primarily feeds on algae and plant debris, grazing on live rocks, decorations, and the aquarium floor.
As an herbivore, it helps prevent algae invasions without ever disturbing other tank inhabitants. It is a natural reef cleaner, complementing algae-eating snails and detritivores like hermit crabs.
