Reef Buffer 1 kg Seachem – pH Buffer and Alkalinity for Reef Aquarium

Reef Buffer Seachem is a buffer specifically formulated for reef aquariums. It helps increase and stabilize the pH at 8.3 while increasing carbonate alkalinity, without the risk of dangerously elevating the pH when used according to recommendations.

Main Features

Main function: stabilization of reef pH.

Target pH: 8.3.

Secondary action: increase in carbonate alkalinity.

Formulation: blend of carbonates and bicarbonates.

High pK: approximately 8.6.

Compatibility: reef aquarium.

Why a High pK in Reef Aquariums

Reef aquariums generate a significant amount of organic acids due to biological activity. A classic buffer with a pK of 8.3 tends to stabilize the pH too low, often between 8.0 and 8.2.

Thanks to its pK of approximately 8.6, Reef Buffer helps maintain a pH closer to 8.3 even in systems heavily loaded biologically.

Role on Alkalinity

Reef Buffer also increases carbonate alkalinity. However, when pH is not a problem, it is preferable to use a supplement dedicated solely to alkalinity.

Available Sizes

50 g, 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg, 4 kg.

Instructions for Use

Test the pH and alkalinity before any use.

Add 5 g (about 1 level teaspoon) per 150 L of water to increase the pH by about 0.1 unit. This dose also increases alkalinity by about 0.5 meq/L.

Dissolve the dose in at least 250 ml of freshwater before adding it to the aquarium.

Alkalinity should not exceed 6 meq/L. Always check parameters before increasing doses.

If an alkalinity of 6 meq/L is reached without achieving a pH of at least 8.2, or if persistent cloudiness appears, the system is probably ionically unbalanced.

In this case, perform a water change or adjust magnesium and calcium levels to a ratio of approximately 3:1 (Mg:Ca).

Important Considerations

Do not overdose. Excess alkalinity can lead to loss of calcium, magnesium, and strontium.

Do not mix directly with calcium, magnesium, or strontium supplements. Space out additions by at least 30 minutes or alternate every other day.

Ideal reef alkalinity is between 3 and 6 meq/L (8 to 17 dKH).

FAQ

Difference with Marine Buffer

Marine Buffer is intended for fish-only marine aquariums and has a pK of 8.3. Reef Buffer, with its pK of 8.6, is specifically designed for reef aquariums.

Difference with Reef Builder

Reef Buffer primarily acts on pH and secondarily on alkalinity. Reef Builder is designed to increase alkalinity without altering the pH.
