Acanthurus triostegus: the convict surgeonfish, an active and robust striped fish

The Acanthurus triostegus, also known as the convict surgeonfish or striped surgeonfish, is an iconic species of tropical reefs. Easily recognizable, this fish features a silver to white oval-shaped body crossed by 5 to 6 distinct vertical black stripes. This stark contrast is reminiscent of the old striped convict uniforms, hence its common nickname.

Native to the lagoons of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, this fish is a tireless grazer that spends its days exploring live rocks and the substrate in search of plant and organic material. A group behavior and constant swimming

The convict surgeonfish is a strict herbivore that primarily feeds on benthic algae, algal films, and microorganisms attached to rocks. In an aquarium, it is essential to provide a diet rich in plants: nori, spirulina, vegetable pellets, and flakes.

Occasional supplements of brine shrimp or mysis can be offered, but the diet should remain plant-based to preserve its health and support its vitality.
