The Naso lituratus, also known as the orange-spined unicornfish, is a large surgeonfish native to the Pacific reefs. It is distinguished by its elongated and elegant silhouette, as well as a characteristic frontal hump visible in adult individuals. This impressive fish can grow up to 45 cm as an adult.
Its silvery grey body is highlighted with striking details: a delicate yellow band at eye level, a black dorsal fin, an orange anal fin, and a white tail with two bright orange caudal scalpels. This contrast of colors and natural presence makes it a highly sought-after species in large-volume reef aquariums.
In its natural habitat, the Naso lituratus lives near the bottom or mid-depth, often in small groups. In captivity, it is preferable to introduce it young into a community environment to develop tolerant behaviors towards other species. When well-acclimated, it is a calm, curious, and non-aggressive fish.
However, it is not advisable to keep it with small fish introduced later, as it might consider them prey, especially if it has not been accustomed to cohabitation from the start.
Due to its size and vitality, the orange-spined unicornfish requires a marine aquarium with a minimum volume of 1000 liters. A large swimming space, effective oxygenation, and moderate to strong water movement are essential for its well-being.
The setup should include rocky areas, a sandy bottom, and open areas for swimming in open water. This fish appreciates a stable system and thrives in a well-established tank.
The Naso lituratus follows a predominantly herbivorous diet, with an occasional zooplanktivore tendency. In an aquarium, it should receive:
A well-measured daily feeding supports its immune system, maintains its natural glow, and strengthens its defenses against stress.
The Naso lituratus is an exceptional fish due to its aesthetics and behavior. Its elegant silhouette, contrasting colors, and smooth swimming make it a majestic inhabitant for very large aquariums. It brings dynamism, utility, and presence to any well-designed reef tank.
For experienced aquarists with a spacious, stable, and well-populated aquarium, the orange-spined unicornfish is a flagship species, both useful in the fight against algae and particularly decorative.
