The Naso elegans, also known as the elegant surgeonfish, is a young surgeonfish that is both aesthetically pleasing and useful for experienced aquarists. It is distinguished by a fine gray coat, a blue line at the base of the bright yellow dorsal fin, a white tail, and two characteristic bright orange caudal scalpels. These elegant visual attributes make it easily recognizable, although it is sometimes confused with the Naso lituratus.
In its natural environment, it lives in the Indian Ocean and waters of the Middle East, in small groups or alone, grazing on algae near the bottom or at mid-depth.
The Naso elegans is a very active fish that requires a good swimming space, even when it is still young. Its behavior is generally peaceful towards other species, provided those species are of compatible size and that the individual is introduced early into a community environment.
It can live alone or with other marine fish, but it is essential to avoid cohabitation with species that are too small or dominated, especially as it grows. The structure of the decor and the water circulation should be designed for its continuous swimming and its need for open territories.
A minimum 1000-liter aquarium is recommended from the introduction of this young Naso elegans, as its growth is rapid and its space needs are constant. A gentle and gradual acclimatization is essential because it is sensitive to parameter variations, particularly stress and sudden changes in temperature or salinity.
Well-oxygenated water, a moderate to strong current, and a stable environment are necessary to ensure its long-term success. Ideally, it should be integrated into a well-matured and stabilized system.
The Naso elegans is omnivorous with a strong herbivorous tendency. At this stage, it should be fed several times a day in small quantities, with a balanced diet including:
Once adult, feeding once a day may suffice, but at this young stage, fractioned meals are recommended to support its metabolism and promote harmonious growth.
The elegant surgeonfish is an exceptional fish both in morphology, presence, and behavior.
For experienced aquarists, the Naso elegans is an ideal opportunity to integrate a future large fish into a stable, structured, and algae-rich reef tank.
