Zebrasoma veliferum, nicknamed sailfin tang, is a magnificent reef fish native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Very similar to the Zebrasoma desjardinii, it is distinguished by its exceptionally large dorsal and anal fins, which can fan out. This unique feature allows it to change its appearance by doubling in visual size, an impressive and effective behavior to intimidate potential competitors or predators.
Its oval-shaped body is decorated with five vertical yellow stripes, a bright yellow tail speckled with blue spots, and fine freckles visible on the snout. The Zebrasoma veliferum does not possess a venomous scalpel, unlike some other tangs, making it a more harmless fish for other species.
Very robust, the Zebrasoma veliferum adapts well to variations in water quality, including moderate nitrate levels. It is omnivorous with a strong tendency towards algae-eating, and actively contributes to cleaning the aquarium by grazing on algae and foraging the substrate. In captivity, it enjoys live rocks and open areas for free swimming.
The Zebrasoma veliferum is rather solitary and can be aggressive towards fish of the same species or genus. However, it is tolerant with other non-competing species, making it a good companion in well-arranged community tanks.
It is recommended not to house it with other Zebrasoma or tangs unless you have a very large water volume.
With its majestic silhouette, deployed sails, and refined colors, the Zebrasoma veliferum is a visual and biological asset of choice for any large reef aquarium. Ideal for passionate aquarists looking for a fish as useful as it is spectacular.
