Holothuria hilla – Non-toxic Detritivorous Sea Cucumber
Holothuria hilla, also known as the tiger tail sand shifter cucumber, is a remarkable detritivorous sea cucumber known for its efficiency in maintaining the sand of a reef aquarium. Native to the Indo-Pacific region and the Red Sea, this nocturnal specimen is harmless to all tank inhabitants and does not release any toxins when stressed or deceased.
An Exceptional Sand Cleaner
The body of the Holothuria hilla is cylindrical, measuring between 25 and 40 cm. Its skin is a light hazelnut to brown color, adorned with small white spots. Active at night, it spends its days buried in the sand or hidden among live rocks. As night falls, it emerges to ingest the substrate and filter organic waste, ensuring a natural and continuous cleaning of the aquarium floor.
Behavior and Maintenance
This super detritivore is particularly appreciated for its ability to recycle sediment. Unlike other sea cucumber species, the Holothuria hilla is completely non-toxic, making it compatible with most fish, corals, and invertebrates. However, it is important to provide it with a suitable sandy substrate and several hiding places to allow it to exhibit natural behavior.
