Dolabella auricularia – The Largest Algae Eater for Reef Aquariums
Dolabella auricularia, also known as the sea hare or gray sea slug, is a highly valued Aplysiidae for its exceptional performance in combating filamentous algae. Its unique morphology, with a shell reduced to an internalized dorsal lamella, makes it an interesting invertebrate to observe in the aquarium.
A Powerful Ally Against Filamentous Algae
This specimen is recognized as the largest consumer of algae in the reef marine world. It spends most of its time grazing, making it an excellent natural cleaning agent in aquariums overrun by unwanted algae.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 150 liters
- Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Décor: sandy bottom, live rocks with present filamentous algae
Exclusive Algae Diet
Note: the Dolabella auricularia is strictly algivorous. If your aquarium does not contain a sufficient amount of filamentous algae, maintaining this species becomes very complicated, if not impossible. It does not feed on dry or frozen food.
Acclimatization and Behavior
Upon introduction, drip acclimatization is recommended. A healthy Dolabella auricularia will start moving quickly in search of algae as soon as it arrives. It is harmless to corals, fish, and crustaceans and is perfectly suitable for a reef aquarium.

Dolabella
Arrivée avec mon kit détritivores Super emballage rien à redire Acclimatée pendant 1h30 au goûtes à goutes Une fois dans le bac elle a fait une petite sieste durant l’après-midi et maintenant elle inspecte le moindre recoin tout en douceur Vraiment de belle taille et tellement sympathique a voir évoluer :-)
