Oxymonacanthus longirostris – Longnose Filefish for Mature Reef Aquarium
Oxymonacanthus longirostris, also known as the longnose filefish, is a very distinctive fish with a tapered body, recognizable by its elongated snout and small beak-shaped mouth. This fish, native to the Indo-Pacific, is known for its delicate swimming and peaceful behavior, moving among branched hard corals.
A Fish for Experienced Tanks
This fish has specific dietary requirements. In the wild, it feeds almost exclusively on Acropora coral polyps. In captivity, it is therefore imperative to have a mature reef aquarium rich in microfauna and corals. Introducing this fish is not recommended in young reef tanks or those lacking in biodiversity.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 350 liters
- Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Decor: branched corals, live rocks, calm areas
- Moderate to strong water flow
Behavior and Compatibility
Oxymonacanthus longirostris is a peaceful and discreet fish, showing no aggressive behavior towards other fish. It moves slowly among the corals in search of food. It is best kept alone or in pairs in a specific reef tank, without direct competing species for food.

Essential natural diet:
- Acropora coral polyps (main source in the wild)
- Microfauna on live rocks
- Nauplii of copepods, enriched artemia (to be fed regularly)
This fish is very difficult to acclimate to inert food. It is reserved for experienced aquarists with a very stable and mature reef aquarium.
