Acreichthys tomentosus, commonly known as the filefish, is a valuable ally for any aquarist looking to naturally eliminate glass anemones Aiptasia sp. and their cousins Majano sp. Native to the Indo-Pacific, this fish belongs to the Monacanthidae family, related to triggerfish.
Its oval-shaped body is covered with fine growths reminiscent of a velvet or moss texture, with a gray/brown to olive green coloration depending on the lighting and stress. Discreet yet effective, Acreichthys tomentosus spends its days foraging on live rocks in search of prey.
Unlike chemical or mechanical solutions that are often ineffective against Aiptasia, this fish offers a natural and sustainable alternative to gently eliminate them without disrupting the balance of the reef aquarium.
This fish is peaceful and discreet, although it may sometimes appear shy upon arrival. Once acclimated, it integrates perfectly into a community reef aquarium. It coexists well with invertebrates and most other fish.
However, it is not recommended to keep it with very aggressive or dominant fish that could stress it or limit its access to food.
Discreet yet formidable against invasive anemones, Acreichthys tomentosus is an ideal aesthetic and biological asset for any reef aquarium concerned with maintaining a natural balance.
