Amblygobius bynoensis: the Discreet Sand Goby for Reef Aquariums

The Amblygobius bynoensis is a marine goby appreciated for its peaceful behavior and its useful role in maintaining the substrate in reef aquariums. This small benthic fish spends most of its time sifting through the sand in search of food, while naturally aerating the substrate.

The Amblygobius bynoensis goby has an elongated, pale-colored body, adorned with a dark horizontal stripe bordered with pale blue that gives it a discreet yet elegant appearance. This discreet fish generally measures between 8 and 10 cm in adulthood and blends perfectly into the natural decor of reef tanks.

A Peaceful and Useful Behavior

The Amblygobius bynoensis is a calm, territorial but non-aggressive fish. It particularly enjoys aquariums with a fine sandy substrate where it can sift through to find food, while contributing to the aeration of the sand and the reduction of anaerobic zones.

This goby also becomes quite tame once acclimated and adapts well to living conditions in captivity. It can be kept alone or as a pair, provided it has enough space to establish its small territory.

A Stable Aquarium Starting at 100 Liters

The Amblygobius bynoensis can be kept in an aquarium of at least 100 liters that includes:

  • A generous layer of fine sand substrate to allow sifting,
  • Stable live rocks to offer hiding spots,
  • Moderate water flow to maintain good water quality without disturbing its environment close to the ground.

This goby particularly appreciates mature and stable tanks with a well-developed microfauna.

A Primarily Benthic Omnivorous Diet

The Amblygobius bynoensis is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds on small organic particles found in the sand. In captivity, it also accepts:

  • Frozen or live brine shrimp and mysis,
  • Sinking pellets and dry foods suitable for benthic fish,
  • Natural microfauna from the substrate.

It is recommended to feed it twice a day to supplement its natural diet and promote its good health.

An Essential Goby for Natural Reefs

The Amblygobius bynoensis goby is an excellent choice for reef aquarists wishing to maintain a living and healthy substrate. Its discretion, ecological utility, and calm behavior make it a choice resident for stable community aquariums.

With a sandy substrate, a calm environment, and a suitable diet, the Amblygobius bynoensis will effectively contribute to the natural balance of your reef aquarium from 100 liters onwards.
