Canthigaster bennetti: Bennett's Pufferfish

The Canthigaster bennetti, also known as Bennett's pufferfish, is a remarkable species due to its behavior and unique biological characteristics. Similar to other Canthigaster species, it has skin containing tetrodotoxin, a powerful natural toxin that protects it from predators in the wild.

A toxic fish to handle with care

However, this toxicity can be dangerous for the entire population of an aquarium in cases of intense stress, death, or biting. Tetrodotoxin can then be released into the water, potentially poisoning all the fish. For this reason, it is strictly discouraged to keep it in a reef or community aquarium without proper preparation.

It is imperative to plan for an oversized filtration system as well as the continuous use of activated charcoal. These precautions help to limit risks in case of the fish's stress or accidental release of toxin.

Feeding behavior and adapted diet

In its natural environment, the Canthigaster bennetti feeds on algae, corals, and detritivores. In an aquarium, to ensure good health and prevent overgrowth of its teeth, it is advised to offer it a varied and rich diet:

  • Peeled shrimp
  • Chopped squid
  • Mussels
  • Large krill
  • Supplementary algae

Regular feeding, twice a day, will help keep the fish active, healthy, and less prone to stress.

For experienced aquarists only

The Canthigaster bennetti is a magnificent and unique fish, but it requires special attention and solid knowledge in aquaristics. Its toxic potential and specific feeding behavior make it a choice not to be taken lightly. It is highly recommended to introduce it only into a fish-only aquarium without invertebrates or corals.

With rigorous maintenance and well-respected precautions, the Canthigaster bennetti can live for several years in captivity, adding an exotic and captivating touch to your setup.
