Mespilia globulus – Algae-Eating Reef Climbing Urchin
Mespilia globulus, also known as the climbing urchin, is a small echinoderm highly valued in reef aquariums for its natural ability to consume algae. Its spherical shape and unique appearance, marked by blue areas and short spines, also make it an aesthetic and functional addition to marine aquariums.
A Harmless Cleaner for Your Reef
Completely harmless to corals, crustaceans, and fish, Mespilia globulus only targets algae, which it slowly grazes on rocks, glass, and even snail shells or decorations. It generally moves at night or in low-light areas, slowly using its small podia (tube feet).
Unlike other urchins, it poses no risk to the decor or the stability of live rocks, making it particularly suitable for small and medium reef aquariums.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum recommended volume: 100 liters
- Temperature: 23°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Water quality: stable reef with low nitrates
- Feeding: natural algae, supplemented with nori leaves if necessary
To maintain a good biological balance and preserve its grazing activity, it is recommended to introduce Mespilia globulus into an aquarium that has been running for several weeks to several months, where algae are already present.
Acclimation Precautions
The Mespilia globulus urchin is sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. It is essential to perform a slow drip acclimation upon receipt.
Important: when handling, never remove it from the water with its mouth facing down. This could trap air bubbles inside, which can be fatal. If temporary removal is necessary, always keep it mouth facing up.

Arrivés comme le reste, en bonne santé et bien emballés. Très sympa à observer, très actifs et très efficaces pour lutter contre les algues : leur passage sur les pierres vivantes laisse un trainée décapée comme si on y avait passé le nettoyeur haute pression. Ils ne font rien a mes coraux mous par contre ils adorent se recouvrir avec le décor y compris les coraux (Pachyclavularia) mal fixés car récemment ajouté. On dirait qu'il a une perruque...
