Thor amboinensis, also nicknamed the Sexy Shrimp, is a tiny but very popular shrimp in marine aquariums. Native to the Indo-Pacific, it is known for its ability to live in symbiosis with a host anemone. Its unique behavior and small size make it a perfect choice for well-established reef aquariums.
The Sexy Shrimp Thor amboinensis is recognizable by its translucent body dotted with white spots on a red or brown background, as well as its characteristic way of "dancing" by raising its abdomen in rhythm with the current. This amusing behavior adds a natural and captivating movement to the reef decor.
It particularly appreciates anemones such as Stichodactyla or Entacmaea, on which it spends most of its time. It can be associated with other shrimps, such as those from the Periclimenes genus, on the same anemone, without notable conflict.
Minimum recommended volume: 30 liters
Water temperature: between 24°C and 27°C
Water flow: moderate
Compatibility: very good with corals, peaceful fish, and other invertebrates
Particularity: often lives in symbiosis with an anemone
In a reef aquarium, the Sexy Shrimp will have no trouble feeding. It retrieves food particles captured by the anemone, including artemias, krill, mysis, and other frozen or freeze-dried foods. Targeted feeding using a pipette or small brush is sometimes useful to ensure it feeds well in very crowded aquariums.
Thor amboinensis is a peaceful shrimp, compatible with small fish, gobies, and other reef shrimps. It can be kept alone, in pairs, or in small groups if the volume allows. However, avoid overly aggressive fish that might disturb it on its host anemone.
In addition to its aesthetic aspect, this shrimp helps regulate small food waste in the aquarium. It is therefore both a decorative and useful invertebrate.
Its small size and non-invasive nature make Thor amboinensis an ideal choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike looking for an atypical and captivating invertebrate.
