The Acanthurus sohal, also known as the striped surgeonfish or zebra surgeonfish of the Red Sea, is one of the most spectacular surgeonfish species. Native to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, this fish displays a finely striped white and blue body, contrasted by a vivid orange-colored tail and caudal, dorsal, and anal fins.
This large fish has an oval and compressed morphology, typical of the Acanthuridae family. Its bluish horizontal line running throughout its body enhances the harmony of its natural stripes. The sohal surgeonfish is also known for its strong and territorial temperament, making it a species that is as majestic as it is dominant.
The Acanthurus sohal is known for its territorial and often aggressive nature towards other fish, particularly other surgeonfish or similarly shaped species. It is therefore advised to keep only one individual per aquarium, unless in very large and well-partitioned systems.
This dynamic fish spends the majority of its time in open water, swimming confidently, inspecting rocks, and defending its space. It should be introduced in an aquarium of at least 1500 liters to allow it to swim freely and fully express its natural behavior.
Despite its temperament, the sohal surgeonfish is a robust and resilient fish once properly acclimated. It adapts well to well-stabilized and maintained systems and can live for many years in captivity. Special attention should be paid to oxygenation and water circulation, as it enjoys moderate to strong current areas, similar to its natural conditions.
The Acanthurus sohal is an active algae grazer. In aquariums, its diet should be rich in plant-based inputs: nori algae, spirulina, vegetable flakes, and pellets form the basis of its daily diet.
Occasional additions of frozen food like brine shrimp or mysis can complement its diet but should not become the mainstay. A predominantly plant-based diet promotes good digestive health, intense coloration, and stable behavior.
The striped surgeonfish Acanthurus sohal is a prestigious choice for large marine aquariums. Its unique striped body, dominant presence, and constant vigor make it an exceptional species that immediately catches the eye in any reef decor.
Reserved for experienced aquarists with a large water volume and the ability to manage its temperament, the sohal surgeonfish stands out as an exceptional fish, both useful against algae and fascinating to observe.
