Reef Iodide 250 ml Seachem – stabilized iodide supplement for reef aquarium

Reef Iodide is formulated from stabilized potassium iodide to provide a safe and bioavailable source of iodine for reef aquariums. It helps maintain iodide at concentrations close to those of natural seawater, without the risk of conversion to toxic free iodine.

Role of Iodide in Reef Aquariums

Iodide is an essential element for many invertebrates and soft corals, including gorgonians and sarcophytons. It plays a role in soft tissue growth and cellular metabolism.

In natural seawater, the iodine concentration is about 0.06 mg/L. In reef aquariums, this value can rapidly decrease due to biological consumption and chemical transformations.

Advantages of Reef Iodide Formulation

Unlike Lugol's type solutions or simple non-stabilized iodides, Reef Iodide is complexed with a stabilizing agent that prevents its conversion to toxic elemental iodine or unusable iodate.

This stabilization ensures that the entire product remains in the form of iodide, the only form directly assimilable by corals, while eliminating the risks associated with biocidal forms of iodine.

Instructions for Use

Beginner Level

Add 5 ml for 200 L of water every two days.

Advanced Level

Add 1 ml for 80 L of water per day to increase iodide by approximately 0.10 mg/L.

Adjust the amount to achieve a concentration between 0.06 and 0.08 mg/L, measured 6 to 12 hours after the last dose.

Once the target value is reached, use this amount daily and check iodide twice a month.

Expert Level

After determining the iodide consumption rate, a continuous drip system can be set up.

The amount to add to the top-up water can be calculated using the following formula: m = 0.125 × v × i, where m corresponds to the milliliters to add, v to the aquarium volume in liters, and i to the desired increase in mg/L.

Notes and Considerations

It is normal for iodide levels to decrease a few days after addition due to biological usage and chemical depletion.

The amount and frequency of use can be adjusted based on system consumption and coral response.

Excess iodide can be harmful. Adjustments should always be gradual.

Do not mix directly with other supplements without spacing out additions.
