This sand is a very fine white substrate, based on calcium and magnesium compounds. It is indicated as ideal for marine aquariums.
A layer of 2 to 3 cm is recommended so that a sufficiently strong current, providing good circulation, can clear the substrate of debris and limit any concentration of nitrates on the ground.
Bora Bora sand is also indicated as optimal for mixing with live sand filtration systems (DSB method). In this case, the substrate should be between 8 and 20 cm in height.
Made from very pure rock, Bora Bora sand is indicated as not releasing nitrates, phosphates, or silicates.
It is indicated as largely composed of calcium and magnesium and as contributing to the amendment of water with calcium and magnesium carbonates and bicarbonates, measured by the TAC (or KH).
It is indicated that about a year after installation, an addition of Bora Bora sand should be planned at about 10% of the amount present in the tank. This addition corresponds to the volume dissolved over the year in the form of calcium, magnesium, carbonates, and bicarbonates.
The great fineness of the sand is appreciated by mollusks, anemones, cerianthids, serpulids, and feather duster worms. Labrids, which like to bury themselves in it, as well as gobiodons (family of gobies), which easily dig into it to take refuge, are also mentioned.
Bora Bora sand is presented as corresponding to the natural environment of the coral reef and as contributing to the proper functioning of the biotope.
Given example: for an aquarium 150 cm long, 50 cm deep, and with a substrate thickness of 2 cm:
150 × 50 × 2 = 15 liters of substrate.
Provided indication: 8 kg of Bora Bora sand is suitable for about 5 liters.
Before any use, it is indicated to thoroughly rinse Bora Bora sand with running water. The water may become milky initially; rinsing should continue until the water is approximately clear.
