Hymenocera elegans – Harlequin Shrimp with Spectacular Colors
Native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, Hymenocera elegans is a small marine shrimp with a unique character. It is nicknamed the harlequin shrimp due to its body adorned with colorful spots ranging from purple to blue, sometimes brown, on a pearly white background. This coloration makes it a true ornamental piece in reef aquariums.
An Exclusive Diet: Starfish
This shrimp is a specialized predator: it feeds exclusively on live starfish. Its strict diet does not allow for any alternatives. It can consume Linckia, Fromia, Archaster, and other benthic species. If its needs are not met, it can attack other invertebrates like certain sea urchins or marine worms.
Important: this shrimp is completely unsuitable for beginner aquarists. It requires careful monitoring, gentle acclimation, and continuous access to its natural food.
Maintenance Conditions
- Recommended minimum volume: 100 liters
- Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
- pH: 8.0 to 8.4
- Moderate to low water flow
- Rocky decor with many hiding places
Behavior and Compatibility
It is peaceful towards fish and corals but can become predatory towards sea urchins or other invertebrates if it lacks suitable prey. It generally lives in pairs or alone, hidden among live rocks.
