Role of Magnesium in Reef Aquariums

The natural concentration of magnesium in seawater is about 1350 mg/L. In reef aquariums, this value can decrease for various reasons, requiring adjustment to maintain chemical balance and parameter stability.

Principle of Use

The increase in magnesium is achieved by the combined addition of Preis magnesium chloride hexahydrate and Preis magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. This combination ensures the proper balance between chloride and sulfate ions.

The required ratio to achieve 1 g of magnesium is as follows:

7.58 g of magnesium chloride hexahydrate + 0.95 g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate = 1 g of magnesium

Calculation Example

Aquarium Volume: 480 L
Measured Magnesium: 1270 mg/L
Desired Magnesium: 1350 mg/L

Difference to correct: 80 mg/L
80 mg × 480 L = 38.4 g of magnesium

Quantities to add:

38.4 g × 7.58 = 291 g of magnesium chloride hexahydrate
38.4 g × 0.95 = 36.5 g of magnesium sulfate heptahydrate

Implementation

The salts must be weighed accurately using a high-resolution scale, dissolved in water, and then gradually added to the aquarium over several days.

It is also possible to proceed with daily additions of diluted solution, for example over a period of 10 days.

Preparation of Solutions

5% Solution:

In 700 ml of water, dissolve:
380 g of magnesium chloride
48 g of magnesium sulfate
Then add water to obtain 1000 ml.

2% Solution:

In 700 ml of water, dissolve:
150 g of magnesium chloride
20 g of magnesium sulfate
Then add water to obtain 1000 ml.

From the fifth day of addition, it is recommended to measure the magnesium concentration every two days.
