Common name: Big-Nose Nason. This fish has an oval-shaped body with numerous black spots and beautiful bluish stripes. For its well-being, it needs an aquarium with plenty of swimming space because once it reaches adulthood, it can measure up to 55 cm (thus it will require an appropriate aquarium). It is hardy after acclimatization if you feed it well with algae supplements.

Juvenile Naso vlamingii: the Big-Nose Unicornfish, Elegant and Destined for Impressive Growth

The juvenile Naso vlamingii, also known as the big-nose unicornfish, is a graceful surgeonfish from the Acanthuridae family. At this juvenile stage, it exhibits an ovaloid body adorned with numerous small black spots and subtle bluish stripes that hint at the beauty of the adult fish. This young specimen is already very active and requires substantial swimming space right from the introduction into the aquarium.

As it grows, the Naso vlamingii develops a fleshy frontal protrusion and even more intense colors. It can reach up to 55 cm in adulthood, becoming one of the largest representatives of the Naso genus. Therefore, it should only be introduced in tanks designed to accommodate very large marine fish.

A Calm Behavior and a Need for Space from a Young Age

The big-nose unicornfish is known for its peaceful and non-aggressive temperament. Even as a juvenile, it enjoys the company of other non-aggressive fish and easily coexists in a well-designed community aquarium. It is very active and spends its time swimming in the middle and upper areas of the tank.

From the juvenile stage, it is essential to provide it with ample swimming space. A minimum 1000-liter aquarium is recommended to anticipate its rapid growth and avoid any stress or motor restriction. The larger the volume, the more stable and harmonious the behavior of the Naso vlamingii remains.

A Robust Fish After Acclimatization

Once acclimatized, the juvenile Naso vlamingii proves to be very resilient, provided it receives a suitable and regular diet. It can withstand the typical conditions of a stable reef tank, with good water movement, sufficient oxygenation, and well-maintained water quality.

However, care must be taken to introduce this fish into a mature and well-cycled system to avoid parameter fluctuations that could affect its initial acclimatization.

An Herbivorous Diet Essential for Its Development

The big-nose unicornfish follows a strict herbivorous diet. In the aquarium, even as a juvenile, it should receive:

  • Nori seaweed at will, attached to a clip or drifting in the current.
  • Vegetable pellets and flakes rich in spirulina.
  • Occasional supplemental feeds like mysis or brine shrimp, particularly to support growth.

A good diet promotes the harmonious development of its body mass, colors, and the future frontal protrusion typical of adults.

A Future Elegant Giant Useful for Large Reef Tanks

The juvenile Naso vlamingii is an ideal fish for experienced aquarists with very spacious aquariums. It is both useful for algae control, robust and peaceful, and possesses a majestic appearance that immediately draws attention in a marine setting.

For those looking to introduce a promising, elegant, active, and very resilient fish, the juvenile Naso vlamingii is an excellent choice, provided its needs for space and nutrition are met from the first weeks in captivity.
