PhosGuard Seachem 2 L – Phosphate and Silicate Removal

Function

PhosGuard rapidly removes phosphate and silicate in marine and freshwater aquariums. It is particularly suited for seawater, where its use and need are better defined.

It is not recommended for phosphate-buffered freshwater, as it would remove the buffer until saturation.

Media Design

PhosGuard is highly porous and bead-shaped to promote easy water flow through and around the media. This geometry aims to increase efficiency and capacity.

Removes phosphate and silicate.

Spherical beads for optimized hydrodynamics.

Irreversible binding.

Usable in seawater and freshwater.

Dosage and Use

May generate heat upon initial contact with water.

Pre-wet by adding the media to twice the volume of freshwater, then rinse.

Rinse before use.

Place to maximize water flow through the media, without tumbling.

Use in a filter bag is recommended.

Dosage: 85 mL (about 1/3 cup) for 200 L of saltwater or 400 L of freshwater.

Monitoring and Replacement

Leave the media in place for 4 days, then test for phosphate or silicate.

If the value hasn't dropped to about 0.02 mg/L, replace the media. Otherwise, leave it in place until levels begin to rise again.

Continuous use of small amounts is preferable to intermittent use of large amounts. Excessive treatment is not recommended.

Seachem Comparison – Bound PO4

Product Bound PO4
PhosGuard (aluminum oxide) 0.87 mg/g
PhosBond (GFO and aluminum oxide hybrid) 1.19 mg/g
PhosNet (GFO) 1.41 mg/g

Important Information

PhosGuard is not an exchange resin and releases nothing into the water.

It can be removed, dried, and put back into service until exhausted.

PhosGuard is not regenerable for phosphate removal due to the nature of phosphate binding to aluminum oxide.

Compatibility

Usable in a canister filter, media chamber, box filter, or any high-flow area of a trickle filter.

Not recommended in a media reactor, as tumbling can produce dust.

Capacity

2 L.
