When magnesium levels drop, calcium and carbonates can precipitate, making it more difficult for corals to assimilate them. This imbalance can lead to slowed growth, a weakened skeleton, degeneration of soft corals, and a lack of coraline algae on live rocks.

Role of Magnesium in Reef Aquarium

Magnesium is incorporated into the skeleton of soft corals and red algae. It is also involved in various cellular processes, including cell division and the metabolism of marine organisms.

A stable magnesium level promotes the growth of calcifying corals, supports the development of coraline algae, and contributes to the overall stability of reef parameters.

Consumption and Monitoring

Magnesium is consumed quickly in the aquarium. Therefore, it is essential to regularly check its concentration through laboratory analysis, particularly via ICP analysis.

Dosage and Recommendations

10 ml of supplement increases the magnesium concentration of 100 L by 10 mg/L.

It is recommended not to exceed an increase of 100 mg/L per day to maintain the stability of the reef system.
